What you need to know about Lead Based Paint

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

Renovation work is something that we have embraced as a unique and challenging aspect of the building business. When the speculative home building business went in the tank in the mid to late 80’s we began to pursue remodeling. We learned that it is much easier to build new houses because there are not as many unknowns. However, through the years we have learned to identify potential unknowns from our experience and believe we can offer good upfront insight to help control cost in a remodel project.

One of the new challenges in the remodel world as of late April 2010 is the EPA’s tightening of controls on lead based paint. Lead based paint was banned in 1978 but most homes build prior to ’78 have it in one form or the other. Lead is a great material for making paint jobs last but not so great from a health standpoint.

As of early April we have become a certified lead contractor and John, on our staff, is certified as a lead inspector according to EPA  guidelines. These new guidelines apply to commercial work as well as residential.

There are very specific procedures that need to be followed if you are working with a house or building built prior to 1978 with regard to demolition on the interior and exterior. Even if you are painting your old house and hire a painter to work directly for you he needs to be certified to work on your house and follow lead paint procedures in the process.

If you have questions or would like more information on lead based paint issues please, give us a call and we will be happy to help you understand the process better.

Welcome

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

I am amazed at the advancement of media and communication. Through my business career, I have gone from no computer and no thought of a personal or business computer to using one of the first IBM office systems in the mid-eighties, to now virtually being able to share insights and updates from my phone.

My hope is this site will serve to be informative as it relates to industry news and changes within the industry. This will be a place for you to learn, answer questions, and receive input that will be beneficial and informative to you in any projects that you might be considering.

Our coming article will address the new residential lead based abatement law that recently came into effect and what you need to know when you are planning a renovation project. Stay tuned…
